Day 10 Thursday 10th October 2024: Sydney National Maritime Museum

I did take one Hop-Off at the Australian National Maritime Museum and enjoyed a couple of hours exploring HMAS Onslow, an Oberon Class Diesel Electric submarine and HMAS Vampire a Destroyer.

HMAS Onslow is one of six Oberon-class submarines, previously operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Ordered in 1963, Onslow was laid down at the end of 1967 by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Greenock, Scotland, and launched almost a year later, and commissioned into the RAN at the end of 1969.She was decommissioned in 1999.  If you would like to know more, here is a link:

HMAS Vampire was the third of three Australian-built Daring-class destroyers serving in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). One of the first all-welded ships built in Australia, she was constructed at Cockatoo Island Dockyard between 1952 and 1959, and was commissioned into the RAN a day after completion.  She was decommissioned in June 1986. In 1977, the destroyer was assigned to escort the royal yacht HMY Britannia during Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's visit to Australia. In 1980,  Again see this link for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Vampire_(D11)

Cape Bowling Green Light was an active lighthouse on Cape Bowling Green, a long headland ending in a long low sandspit, about 19 miles from Ayr, Queensland. The first lighthouse at the location, established in 1874, was moved multiple times. It was prefabricated in Brisbane, shipped to the location, moved twice due to coastal erosion and finally transferred for display here at the Museum in Darling Harbour.

I also enjoyed a conversation with Lindsay – the resident model maker at the Museum as well as visiting the Wildlife Photography of the Year Exhibition. Many amazing photos of wildlife in all its guises but none that I can share with you.

Well, it's 22.21 here so about Noon with you.  Enjoy!
